Issuing a statement, The Lawyers’ Collective has expressed its deep concern over the failure to appoint an Inspector General of Police (IGP) according to the Constitution and its profound impact on the Police Department and the criminal justice system.
Over the last eight months, the President has extended IGP C. D. Wickremeratne’s tenure on several occasions. The latest such extension is reported to have been made by the President on 3rd November 2023, extending the service of the IGP by another 3 weeks.
