Delivering a special statement in Parliament today (02), President Ranil Wickremesinghe announced that an agreement was reached on June 26th with Sri Lanka’s official creditors concerning debt repayment. Authorized Cabinet officials have signed these agreements on behalf of Sri Lanka – PMD
The President highlighted to Parliament the successful outcomes achieved thus far by following the four-pronged plan presented to Parliament two years ago – PMD
The President informed Parliament that Sri Lanka’s foreign debt totals $37 billion. This includes $10.6 billion in bilateral debt, $11.7 billion in multilateral debt, $14.7 billion in commercial debt & $12.5 billion in sovereign bonds – PMD
The President noted that various opinions on debt restructuring & related issues are being expressed both inside & outside Parliament. However, he clarified that some of these statements are not accurate – PMD
President Ranil Wickremesinghe emphasized that while many have suggested obtaining concessions for foreign loans without any sacrifices; this is impractical & inconsistent with international practices – PMD
