Permanent reconstruction of the Badulu Oya major irrigation project in Kandaketiy, Badulla District, officially commenced yesterday (June 3) following severe damage caused by Cyclone Ditwah.
The government has allocated Rs. 324.43 million for the restoration, marking a significant investment in long‑term agricultural resilience.
The project, which irrigates 1,775 acres of farmland, had collapsed at several points during the cyclone.
Temporary repairs were swiftly carried out under the direct supervision of the Irrigation Department, with support from local farmers, civil organizations, and Tri‑Forces personnel.
These efforts enabled water release from January 2026 to sustain cultivation until permanent works could begin.
Authorities say the new reconstruction will provide stable, long‑term relief for farming communities in the region, ensuring uninterrupted agricultural activity and strengthening disaster recovery measures.
