The series, Rendez-vous with Yasmin & Kumar by Thema Collection, was introduced at a media evening in Colombo. Its first episode visits Deewara in Mawella, Tangalle, featuring the coastal retreat, its surroundings and the local community. The series will be available on Thema Collection’s YouTube platform.

“Through Rendez-vous with Yasmin & Kumar, we want to tell the stories behind the places we visit — the people, the culture, the experiences and the little details that make each destination special,” said Yasmin Rajapaksha, one of the voices behind the series.

Experiences beyond accommodation

Speaking at the event, Thema Collection Chairman Chandra Wickramasinghe said travellers increasingly want to explore and understand a destination, rather than simply stay at a hotel.

“Travellers today are looking for more than just a room. They want to explore, experience and understand the destination. At Thema, we have been creating experiences that allow our guests to discover Sri Lanka through its people, culture, nature and stories,” he said.

Thema Collection operates 17 properties across Sri Lanka. Its offerings combine accommodation with excursions and experiences centred on wildlife, heritage, culture and local communities, catering to families and other travellers with varied interests.

Sustainability and community engagement

Director of Marketing and Business Development Maxime Wickramasinghe outlined the group’s sustainability work, including biodiversity research through the BERI Initiative and free education provided through its ReV IT & Language Centres. According to Thema Collection, more than 6,500 children from local communities have benefited from the centres.

“Sustainability for us is not simply about reducing our environmental impact. It is also about how we work with communities, protect biodiversity, preserve culture and create value for the destinations in which we operate,” he said.

The media evening brought together members of the media and travel community for the series launch and discussions about Thema Collection’s approach to travel in Sri Lanka.
