A devastating fire broke out late Sunday at the Werdha Damai nursing home in Manado, on Indonesia’s Sulawesi island, killing 16 people and injuring at least three others, local authorities said. Firefighters were alerted to the blaze at around 8:31 p.m., and many victims were found inside their rooms, where they were likely asleep when the fire began.
Emergency teams evacuated 12 unhurt residents to a nearby hospital as footage showed flames engulfing the facility while neighbors helped seniors escape. Police are investigating the cause of the fire as identification of the victims continues.
