The Irrigation Department has issued a severe flood warning for low-lying areas along the Mahaweli River within the Pasbage Korale Divisional Secretariat Division following heavy rainfall in the river’s upper catchment areas.
The department said there is a risk of severe flooding in low-lying areas around the Mahaweli River due to the heavy rainfall received over the past few hours.
Residents in the affected areas and motorists using roads passing through these locations have been urged to exercise extreme caution.
People living close to the river have also been advised to remain highly vigilant and take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their property in the event of flooding.
The Irrigation Department has requested relevant disaster management authorities to take the necessary precautionary and safety measures.
The warning, issued at 10.30 a.m. on Sunday (20), will remain valid until 10.30 a.m. on Monday (21).
