Cyclone Ditwah’s severe floods have inflicted an estimated Rs. 3 billion worth of damage on the University of Peradeniya, local officials say, as academic buildings and vital facilities were hit hard by rising waters.

The deluge, brought on by heavy rains linked to the cyclone in late November, submerged parts of the campus and caused significant losses to valuable infrastructure, equipment, and property across several faculties. Early assessments indicate the financial toll on buildings, laboratories, and other university assets could reach around Rs. 3 billion, though further evaluations are underway.

Damage has been reported in multiple academic departments, with the floodwaters disrupting normal university operations and leaving staff and students to grapple with the aftermath. Officials are working to determine the full extent of losses and plan for rehabilitation.
